There is a lot of anecdotal evidence of spirits and even one story in my family, but this is something that can never be studied scientifically where the repeatability of a phenomenon on demand is required.

Dr. Ian Stephenson, University of Virginia, has 2,500 documented cases of reincarnation about which he has written several academic tomes that are dry reading, but excellent documents.

There are more popular books about well-documented children who have lived previous lives, one as a pilot in WWII who went to a reunion of his old unit and knew everyone there, greeting them with knick-names, freaking everyone out, but on leaving told his mother that he never wanted to return because everyone looked so old. And there, may be the key why many more do not have such recollections: It is just too painful.
