GILMAN – State police from Ashkum will conduct child safety seat inspections for free Saturday in Gilman.

I grew up in a microscopic smudge of a town. Ashkum, IL boasted some 600 residents at the time of the 1970 census, when I first became aware of such things.

Arrests: Iroquois County Police arrested Tina A. Voyles, 32, Chatsworth, Jan. 6, She was wanted on an Iroquois County warrant charging her with forgery.

WGFA Radio is reporting that there are warming centers at the Ashkum Fire Station and at the former Lang Auto Parts Store on Spaulding Street in Clifton.

Reporter The weekend's icy weather was an appropriate lead in to the first day of winter yesterday.

The following communities will be without service for at least another day: Ashkum, Chebanse, Clifton, Cullom and Piper City.

Holiday music filled the Ashkum Coliseum Renaissance style. The Central High School Madrigals sang traditional and contemporary music for guests as they dined Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
