Townsend should run as fast as they can away from any talk of regionalization.

I still maintain that we don't need our own police dept. and all the crap that goes with it. Regionalization would be a good thing. Towns much larger in area than ours in Western Mass. have regional departments and they take care of business. To have a police dept. sitting around running radar all day is crazy. There is not enough crime in this little town to warrant what they have or do. AAlot of money copuld be saved if they regionalized and also if they did away with the two bench warmers at the fire station. Why not put them to work on the town roads or running radar. We pay them to sit there and wait for the tones to go off. That's great. To bad people don't get sick and hurt only during the day. I can't believe no one in authority sees what goes on there. Go by on any given day at any given hour and see all the "visitors" and shoot the s---ters hanging around. Real waste of money. Maybe they do see what goes on there and choose to turn the other way.

Be careful what you wish for. Regionalization as I understand it does NOT mean the town gets police coverage for free. Instead the town receives a bill for its share of the region (like schools).

Until now Ashby has been able to run the police department pretty lean. The police station is at the end of its life. The police cars are pretty old. Some hours of the day are covered by the state police etc. I'm not saying its right...it is what it is.

A regional arrangement means that the town would not be able to cut any corners whatsoever. The soccer moms in Townsend would simply not stand for it!

Regionalization takes fiscal control away from the town and I strongly suspect that the residents of Ashby would not stand for that.

I agree with you 100%. I want to be the one that says yes or no to something that is going to raise my taxes. With a regional PD it will just be jammed down our throats. BEWARE of this the grass always looks greener.

Ashby already pays Lunenburg to hold and watch their prisoners. So just give it up, if the politcians can't balance a small budget like Ashby. Just think if they were going to build low income housing??????????

Just as long as the Chief search committee does NOT contain people with last names including Macullum, Saunders.... This thing may work and hopefully Ashby will have a quality Police Chief. Now something still needs to be done for a new Ashby police station.
What are you thinking

Its funny people like you complain the police and fire do nothing but there will be a day when you will need their services and their response time will be more than you will like. Then and only then will you want to have you "own" police and fire dept. back. Oh yea If you have kids its nice to know the police are doing their job running radar don't you think, but then again when you or someone you know gets either hit or into an accident you will say where were the police and fire. No matter how small the town is you should have a public saftey department and its never a waste of money, there is crime everywhere you just choose to believe there isn't any Ashby.. I'm sure there are no drugs or other crimes that happen in Ashby . Oh yea let the firemen run radar .. cause I am sure they are trained !!!

That's right!! Don't forget about those tires that were stolen! I'm sure that never would have happened if there was a cop on duty! Get real!

You have a level 3 sex offender who was finally stopped by the Ashby police, hopefully for good. You have a maniac on Davis Rd. who likes to swing machettis at the police. You have the drunk townfolk who like to beat their wives and husbands....yep you are right..you do not need police.

No one will take our Chief in a straight up trade, we'll probably have to throw in some body armor or a slightly used cruiser.
