Police look into possible sexual assault at home
ARLINGTON -- A mentally disabled man may have been sexually assaulted at an unlicensed assisted-living home where he lived with six other people -- three of whom are registered sex offenders -- in east-central Arlington, state officials say.
Police are investigating a complaint that the man was sexually assaulted last month at the Loving Care center, Arlington police spokesman Lt. Blake Miller said. He declined to release details of the complaint, citing department policy against releasing information about sexual assault victims. Read more

Middle-schooler being bullied must seek out trusted adult
Dear Abby: The letter from 'Hurt in Ohio' (Dec. 8), the 13-year-old girl who is being bullied, was deeply affecting. I have been a middle-school teacher for 10 years. I have seen what bullying can do to kids.
I'm proud that 'Hurt' told her parents, but because that hasn't helped her, please tell her to find an adult at school whom she trusts and tell that adult what is happening. If she doesn't get a quick response, she should keep going to more adults until someone listens. --MIDDLE-SCHOOL TEACHER IN INDIANA Read more

3 teens injured in shooting at party
“It's usually just this quiet, most of the time”
ARLINGTON -- Three teens were shot at a party in far south Arlington late Saturday during what police say may have been a dispute between rival gangs.
The teens, two girls and a boy, all 17, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
It was the third time in less than five months that teens have been shot -- including one fatally -- during fights at parties in Arlington.
Police have stepped up gang enforcement and have some gang initiatives that will continue, police Lt. Blake Miller said. But he warned that the community will need to help prevent future gang-related incidents by keeping tabs on whom their children are with and what they are doing. Read more

Reward offered for return of bishop's crown
“He was almost more upset about the bag”
ARLINGTON -- Area Greek Orthodox leaders are offering $5,000 for the return of a bishop's crown, which was stolen Friday.
If it is returned to one of their churches in its original condition, they say, no questions will be asked.
'I don't foresee that you can walk into a pawnshop and be able to get rid of it,' said the Rev. Christopher Constantinides of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Dallas.
On Jan. 25, Metropolitan Isaiah, bishop of the Northwest Region of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, had just arrived in North Texas from Colorado to visit local parishes. He had not yet checked into his hotel and was having dinner in north Arlington when someone broke into a local priest's car and stole his personal items. They included a bag containing the ornate crown threaded with gold and silver and inlaid with semiprecious stones and religious icons. It is valued at $10,000. Read more

From a humble start, nonprofit has aided kids for a half-century
“The community, I think, has done a fantastic job of building up the Y”
The YMCA of Arlington kicks off its 50th anniversary tonight with a celebration dinner at the Arlington Convention Center featuring baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan.
The event benefits the Y's Strong Kids Campaign, which provides financial assistance to kids participating in Y programs. Last year, the nonprofit gave away more than $500,000 through the program, officials said.
The YMCA of Arlington started in 1958 with a storefront office in the 100 block of East Main Street, in an area that is now a parking lot. Bob Cunningham, the nonprofit's executive director from 1958 to 1971, said the focus from the beginning was youths, with camping trips and Saturday morning fitness activities at a school among the Y's first local projects. Later, the Y expanded with programs geared toward the whole family. Some of those included bridge lessons, dog handling, judo, painting and English as a second language. Read more
