the family had to be satisfied. they had no choice. Carl's family did what they could and can feel proud about that. its difficult to fight against the DA when he doesn't want to do anything but plea bargain. At least through the family's effort, north got an extra 7 years.

How sad that someone can break into someone's house while they are on vacation, shot them, dispose of their body, and drive around in there car and not get the death penality!!! There is no justice. God Bless the Ryder family for doing everything they could!

Well, at least he didn't get the typical 6-23 months in county jail. I agree with Rob's post in that this DA's office is scared of trials.

FINALLY.........at least the Ryder family can have some peace now. Not that North going to jail will put to rest the everyday feelings of missing a loved one, but they can hopefully move on with their lives now that he is in a jail cell, where he should have been all along.

Did you people even read the entire story? If this case had gone to Jury and they believed North's story about self defense, he could have walked away scott free. Be glad that he is in prison. You can't trust a jury in Franklin County, just look at the Harshman case....

You are right. That plea bargain was going through, no matter what. The family vigourously protested prior to the hearing, told the judge why during the hearing, then graciously accepted what they couldn't change.

You are right also in that their tenaciousness and demand for (as the sign says) justice for Carl insured that he didn't get off with time served.

Although I am sure they still wish Carl's killer would have got life in prison, they can feel good that through their actions, the public will be protected for at least another 22 years.

The 22 years is the time he will have to serve before being eligible for parole. According to the state judicial Web site, he is probably eligible right now for parole on the burglary charge. Perhaps the parole board will recognize that he is a career criminal, however, and refuse to grant him parole on that charge, which would add a few more years to the minimum before he can be paroled on the murder charge.

You are absolutely correct. It may not seem right to trade 22 years of dirtbags life for the life of his victim but at least it is over and the family can rest assured that he will be old and gray when or if he ever gets out of prison. The old saying a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush rings true here. It is always better to get a guilty plea with no appeals than it is to put it in the hands of 12 unknown people that may have a different agenda.

What is wrong with Franklin County's Probabation Department? Time served? He should serve the rest of his lifetime. Rehab is not for vicious animals.

Maybe the plea was accepted due to the current financial constraints. The county could have spent a lot of money to prosecute only to have North freed or given a reduced sentence due to a "mental defect". While North may not have gotten the sentence most had hoped for, at least he did not get away with this heinous act.

This nightmare will never be over for the Ryders. I don't believe in rehab. Rehab is for drug addicts and alcoholics, not for the mentally off. I just don't think Carl got justice. My prayers are still with his family and friends.
