It can be a challenge being a working mother these days. It's a balancing act of juggling a job -- or two -- with taking the kids to ball games or band practice and helping with homework and running a household -- cooking, cleaning, laundry and keeping track of the family's finances.
But what if that job started when the sun came up in the morning and didn't end until you went to sleep at night? What if it included milking cows, feeding hogs, operating heavy machinery and pricing grain on the futures market -- and you still had all those other household duties? Well, if that were the case, you just might be able to call yourself a Madison County farm woman. Read more

Highland seeks to cut costs on building
“We do not have the funds at this time, but we anticipate we will. I feel fully confident that we can come up with a bid by the seventh of April -- a contract -- that HACSM can fully fund.”
--
Highland and a Christian organization that helps the needy are working to reduce projected costs of building a larger service center after bids came in about $100,000 more than expected.
Rather than seek new architectural drawings and new bids, Highland City Council is working with low-bidder Korte & Luitjohan Contractors Inc. in Highland to cut costs for Highland Area Christian Service Ministry's new center. Birdhouses are mementoes of historic school
“I think family history is very important”
Don Hastings just shakes his head at the old Suhre School near Alhambra.
Originally known as Hoxsey School, it was built on land donated by his great-grandfather, Christopher Hoxsey. His mother, the late Jennie Hastings, attended from 1897 to 1901.
'I'm aggravated that we didn't purchase it when we had a chance,' said Don, 76, of Edwardsville. 'But I didn't have as much interest back then.'
Today, the one-room, frame schoolhouse stands in a cornfield owned by farmer Richard Suhre. It has a lean-to shelter on one side that was used for storage. Read more
