Preliminary findings from a state audit of finances in the Town of Alden has led to a criminal investigation, and the town clerk is now on paid administrative leave.

The longtime town clerk of Alden was placed on paid administrative leave on Monday because of ongoing investigations into town finances.

Management within the Erie County Sheriff's Department has ordered a massive shake up of its staff, transferring dozens of guards from the Alden Correctional Facility.

Inmate Todd E. Fogle got the ball rolling. "I would like to know why The Buffalo News was stopped being delivered," he said in a grievance he filed at the Erie County Correctional Facility.

State inspectors in a recent report describe the Erie County penitentiary as a management-challenged prison where deputies abandon their posts, legitimate inmate grievances go nowhere, and would-be reforms move slowly.
