Let's take a look at all the doctors that give out powerful painkiller prescriptions for hangnails. Maybe it is time to moniter the ratio of painkiller prescriptions per doctor. Sometimes I think they are the real drug pushers.

Some doctors can now treat painkiller and heroin addiction in the privacy of their office with a monthly prescription of buprenorphine (Suboxone/Subutex). This suppresses the cravings and withdrawal so patients can do the other important things needed to recover.

TreatmentMatch.org is a free service from the non-profit organization - National Alliance of Advocates for Buprenorphine Treatment (NAABT.org ) it is a confidential way to find doctors certified to treat opioid addiction in their office.

Bupe is abuse resistant and has a ceiling to its effects making accidental fatal overdoses unlikely. It also blocks other opioids for days, and is not euphoric to people tolerant to opioids. It has enough opioid effect to stop cravings and withdrawal allowing the patient and their family to make the necessary changes that will translate to sustained addiction remission.

Learn more about buprenorphine at www.naabt.org or talk with patients who have used it at www.AddictionSurvivors.org

Yes, Massachusetts, how about putting your own house in order? The things that you think people should be upset about just doesn't happen at least not here in Massachusetts, a State which saves its outrage for problems it can associate with the opposite political party.

I would have thought that the Massachusetts public would be outraged that the last three Democratic Speakers of the House were booted out on corruption charges, but that didn't seem to get a rise out of them either. They look the other way when bad stuff happens in our State and with the dug-in Democratic politicians. Massachuetts is simply too lenient on many issues related to drugs and crime.

The way I look at it,at least in Massachusetts the crooked politicians get caught and prosecuted, not so in many other states!
Seems as though many Republicans caught in mens room stalls,or in foreign countries with their mistresses, just keep on keepin on!

The DA is totally correct--these pain suppressor narcotics like OxyContin and Fentanyl are really legal heroin. They are used interchangeably with heroin but are more dangerous because people don't realize how deadly they are.

At Novus Medical Detox Center we see it every day. We have to stop the drug companies, drug distributors and pill pushing doctors who want profits and will do anything to obtain them.

I can see where that might make sense such as the same as saying that's what Cancer does. Have you ever had a family member pass away from cancer? Or, have you ever had someone vey close to you fall into this unfortunate scale of addiction? I'm sure that I can answer that for you...NO. Because if you had, you'd be a little more sensative to the issue.

Doesn't surprise me. With all the liberal idiots in the state I'm really surprised its not more. They need a new state motto " The Drug State".

I went to the ER for something (can't remember direct issue, it was a few years ago). Dr. didn't do any tests, just asked me which pain killer I prefer. I was shocked. No idea why this guy made the assumption I was a user and freely he was willing to give me what an addict would be looking for. I left without the pain meds, with disgust. I also heard that the largest mental health facility was told by the DA that they were the largest drug dealer's of Pittsfield.

If drug overdose is such an issue in Berkshire County, then maybe when the drug task force arrests people for selling, the judges should follow through and put them where they belong!!!!

I feel sorry for the FEW people who truly need these meds. and can't get them because of all the scipts that got into the wrong hands. In my experiences it has been very hard to get pain meds.Rightfully so...........It should be hard. You need medical documentation to prove they are needed. My meds are kept in a lock box.........out of sight........We have to be responsible and not let them out of our sight..

So I am wondering when Berkshire County will finally get a methadone maintenance clinic, this being a proven method of treating opiate addiction. Those seeking these services must now travel to the lower Pioneer Valley or to Albany to get help. This is a block to Berkshire County residents seeking help, as well as a staggering cost to the Commonwealth in transportation costs.
Suboxone/bupenorphine is not appropriate for many addicts seeking help.
Again, just wondering....

What about diversion of medications from those on pain clinics? Seems like the streets and private doctors aren't the only ones....

Strong pain relievers have a place in medicine. Severe pain requires equally severe treatment. In stead of making it more difficult for legitimate patients to get what they need, let's stop the illegal dealing/use of these otherwise legal drugs. Excessive laws just make it more likely that the people who should get these drugs won't. Doctors may stop prescribing them, out of fear of problems or the added paperwork etc. Any M.D. who abuses the prescribing of these drugs needs to be sent to prison. Any 'patient' who abuses-resells them should be locked up, with appropriate treatment, if necessary. Don't throw out the baby with the bath water.

Yeah so let the Drug Dealer from the Berkshire Eagle today only get probation for dealing illegal drugs. Way to go District Attorney's office.
