I was one of the 70 workers that lost their jobs back in April, at the time I thought it was the worst thing that could happen to me. I was fortunate enough to bump into the currency division. It was tower work and I didn't want to do it. Still don't but it wasn't the end of the world. I hope Stationery can survive the move and economy. Hang in there Stationery. CDS it's only 25 minutes away. If you're thinking of quitting,
take my word for it there aren't any manufacturing jobs out there.I hear after the move there giving the division 1 year to show a profit. Hopefully you can turn it around. I hate to think of Crane & Co without the Stationery Division.

I too work in the paper industry. I wouldn't bet on stationary as the future for paper (or Crane). Better off making BigMac boxs for MceeD's.

I thought if something was 'STATIONARY' that meant it 'DIDN'T MOVE'? What's going on here? They're changing the rules.

I guess it was inevitable as the need for social stationery has declined so much in recent years. I hope its true about nobody loosing their jobs, the 9% pay decrease was bad enough.

I'm fortunate that I was able to take early retirement, or I too would be affected by this unfortunate news. I survived the sale and closing of Eaton Paper Co 20 years ago and had 18 good years at Crane's. I'd hate to think of Crane's without the Stationery dicision too.

So why am I worse? I stood up for you by saying the two idiots in post one and two were fools.I worked in three area mills in mid level management positions and I escaped the mill world before the mills all started to fold. Most folded due to unions and yours can still be saved so quit the usual mill rat cry baby routine and work harder than ever and work as you would if you owned the business. If you don't like that idea then get used to being a pizza delivery boy.

If WalMart opened a Sams Club( I think it won't) the same employies will still be working and it will draw thousands of people a week into our city. For your information the North Adams Walmart is very profitable and I don't see it closeing. Maybe they could push more food products. Also maybe the powers that be in town could get an ALDI or a Price Right to move into town as our so called supermarkets could use a little competition.

First and foremost Tony get your scorrect the "Crane" near the NA. airport is the result of a "difference of business opinions-and family fued". The whole social business fell off the cliff because a (now retired-i think he did cause the axe was coming) Westons mill manager and his karate side kick couldn,t manage a one car funeral. Thus the social customers started looking elsewhere. The stationary manager was let go cause cause he buck the New Vp -who came from Waterford crystal and didn,t know **** from shynola, then they ( alittle higher up get rid of her -they say she retired. Now they have another new manager and VP?????????? And they can,t figure out why the profit is tight????? So now they,ll spend $$$$$$$$$ more to move and believe me it will not work . Those working with the "sub-contractor" paper all say the same thing the product sucks compared with the in house of years past. All of us still there know the real story----- Cranes is and upside-down pyramid and that says it all.

The reason I escaped the mills was other people in management were more than I could take, drunks, jerks, back stabbers and premadona's. remember my old saying. The biggest mill rat of the bunch is always the jerk with the tie. There is life after the mills and if you think you will last until retirement you are only fooling yourself.Escape as soon as you can.

The CDS employees that Kittredge said were "please by the news" represent only 10% of the 200 North Adams employees. For most of us this move is a shameful abandoning of North Adams. It would have been cheaper to move less than 100 Dalton employees and their small amount of equipment than it would 200 employees and all the machinery in North Adams. Other than losing our jobs entirely this was the worst news possible. We've already had a 9% pay cut and 2/3 of us has had a layoff.Kittredge is lying if he says any of us are "pleased"

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Leo

If you ask someone to give you a hand today, don't be surprised if they make a mess of it. That's probably because their mind isn't on the job, but it might also be because your instructions aren't as clear as usual. So before you get angry, check that what you said made sense. Relations with someone older or more influential than you could also be blighted by confusion or doubt now.
