Harper revisits scene of successful campaign stunt to showcase GST cut

“This will be a tax cut that you will see every time you shop, tax relief that you experience, a tax break that no politician will be able to take away without you noticing.”

- Stephen Harper is ringing in what could be an election year with a replay of a campaign stunt that helped propel him into the prime minister's office two years ago.

Harper is to visit the same electronics store on Monday in Mississauga, Ont., where he first unveiled the Conservative party's pledge to reduce the goods and services tax to five per cent from seven per cent over five years.

Monday's visit is meant to underscore the fact that Harper has delivered on his popular 2006 election campaign promise. He lopped the first percentage point off the hated tax last year and the second percentage point cut goes into effect Jan. 1. Read more

Loonie flies highest as The Canadian Press top news story of the year

“The Canadian dollar is the best roller coaster ride of the year”

- Fair-feathered friend to some, foul burden to others, the iconic Canadian bird that took on the world's superpower currencies in 2007 has been picked as the top Canadian news story of the year.

The soaring loonie had no peer as the year's top story in the annual survey of Canada's broadcasters and newspaper editors conducted by The Canadian Press.

With 74 of 136 votes cast, the loonie was the clear choice over a wide assortment of headline grabbers that ranged from the RCMP Taser incident (runner-up with 15 votes) to the Robert Pickton trial to climate change and - last year's choice as top story - the war in Afghanistan. Read more

“I'll never forget Benazir Bhutto”

- A mixture of sorrow and rage punctuated the traditional Muslim call to prayer Friday as Pakistani Canadians mourned Benazir Bhutto and lashed out at Pakistan's government for failing to prevent her assassination.

Anguished, tear-stricken faces were in abundance at a Toronto-area mosque as members of the Pakistan People's Party of Canada embraced before a funeral prayer service "in absentia" was held.

Across the country, members of Montreal's Pakistani community also gathered to mark Bhutto's death, while about 100 people attended a memorial in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey. . Read more
