This is great news! El Paso needs jobs. This area already has a black cloud hovering over it.

This is a sad day for El Paso. How can you give loyalty to a company that has killed people and harmed the environment. It keeps other HIGH TECH jobs away. Look at the history of this evil company. Do you remember Smelter Town? IT DOES NOT EXIST BECAUSE OF ASARCO, LOTS OF PEOPLE DIED Get on Google Earth and look for Smelter Cemetery PROOF! El Paso how can you give loyalty to a company that abandoned you for so long. I understand we need jobs but to what cost? We need good jobs that keep our grads from leaving El Paso. ASARCO = DEATH and ANY pollution adds to a lot of pollution!

Big Surprise

Rick Perry and minions of corporate industry who run the People's Republic of Texas have once again run rough shod over the people of Texas. No surprise there.

Wow, it never fails. The lives of El Pasoans are once again marginalized. Texas sucks. El Paso doesn't. Why can't we become the largest city in New Mexico?

Wed, Asarco was granted a permit by TCEQ. The activist, along with Mayor Cook and his cohorts had there chance to present there case. After both parties presented evidence (pro and con), TECQ concluded Asarco meets all regulatory requirements to begin the process to restart operation.
Its one thing to have activists to protest a private company but another having your city government participating.
The citizens of El Paso should demand Mayor Cook and his cohorts to repay the taxpayers of this community.

It's good to know that in the end, facts and science prevailed over all the lies, misinformation and ignorance that drives those who oppose the reopening of ASARCO. Stop relying on other people for information, go to the TCEQ office downtown and ask to see all information regarding ASARCO. Get informed and then voice your opinion.

Good! We need the jobs here. I reead in the obituaries a few months ago about a man that died at 89 and he was retired from Asarco. It seems like he lived a pretty long life. With all of the new EPA standards in place, I think we will all be fine. What concerns me more is all the troops moving into Ft. Bliss and killing someone in another DWI!

Are people really that ignorant? Check the Classifieds Donny & Sam. Last time I checked there were plenty of jobs out there that didn't affect our Air Quality. Why should all of us have to put up with bad air just because you can't find a JOB??? ASARCO SUCKS

We all knew the result before it was handed down. The TCEQ is just another appointed wasteland for the political contribution class to "serve".
I find some humor in the fact that our local poli's were naive enough to think this wasnt a forgone conclusion. It's just like the downtown plan that the local elites are going to shove down the throats of the poor. The Goose has meet the Gander...how did you like it?

It looks like the hand wringing obstructionists lost this one. Cook and his minions never wanted a fair hearing on the facts because they knew that they could not win. They wanted to keep up the "sky is falling" slander they have perpetuated for the last 6 years. Asarco agreed to EVERY demand that was made of them and still Cook wasted millions of our tax dollars trying to stop a legitimate business which will bring thousands of well paying jobs and millions of dollars to the economy to El Paso. Cook and every other elected official who fought this should be impeached.

This is ridiculous! ASARCO is bankrupt... has anyone forgotten that? It is so funny to see comments from people who say they want to work for ASARCO. Don't they remember how ASARCO left them out in the cold when it shut down last time? What about the people who are still owed pensions but were sued by ASARCO just so they don't have to pay those loyal workers anything? Mayor Cook is doing the right thing fighting these bullies!

All the jobs that pay minimum wage and contribute little to the overall economy are listed in the classifieds. This is actually good news for free enterprise and the commies in government that are trying to restrict it have lost a round in the continuing struggle.

THANK YOU TCEQ!!!! That will bring approximately 350 exyremely good paying jobs back to El Paso. The Mayor and city council didnt want ASARCO to reopen because they wanted to make big money from land developers. This whole air quality b/s was nothing but a scam on the part of city government. There has never been any health threat from ASARCO the worst thing that has ever occurred was if the wind was right there would be a sulphur smell. If the city government had their way El Paso would be a bigger ghost town than what it is. Look around how much industry is left in EP compared to the 50s. It was all run off by city government. The Railroad has been run off to New Mexico because the land developers want the RR property. T RR provided a lot of high paying jobs that are now in New Mexico

Haven't you all seen the dark clouds every morning lingering from the pollution in Mexico. ASARCO is not operating at the moment yet the pollution is still around. Can't blame the pollution problem on ASARCO. Blame it on Mexico.

So there were 100 supporters. How many protesters? Why is that information not in the story?
