“It was a rough year last year, but I would say business got a whole lot tougher at year end and so far this year”

Stressing he still believes Tribune Co.

cannot cut its way to prosperity but citing the impact of 'a weak economy and significant declines in advertising volume at our newspapers,' Chairman and Chief Executive Sam Zell announced cutbacks at the flagship Chicago Tribune and its sister papers Wednesday.

Sara Lee CEO Brenda Barnes to leave New York Times' board

Brenda Barnes, chief executive of Downers Grove-based Sara Lee Corp., is stepping down from the board of The New York Times Co. after a decade as a director.

New York Times' directors are elected annually and Barnes decided not to stand for re-election at this spring's annual meeting, Catherine Mathis, a spokeman for the Times, said Tuesday.

'She has significant outside commitments that would make it difficult for her to put in the time,' Mathis said.

Barnes, 53, has been CEO of Sara Lee since February 2005. Prior to joining the foodmaker in July 2004 as chief operating officer, she had been a high-ranking officer at Pepsi-Cola. Read more

“It's a great day for the labor movement. We have suffered a lot of privation in order to achieve what we've achieved”

The Writers Guild of America moved swiftly Sunday toward a resolution of its three-month-old strike, with guild leaders voting unanimously to ask members to decide on ratifying the contract and ending the walkout.
