Murder Charges Filed In SoCal School Shooting

Prosecutors filed a charge of murder with hate-crime and firearm-use enhancements Thursday against a 14-year-old boy who will be tried as an adult in the school shooting of a classmate who has been declared brain dead but remains on a ventilator.
The charge against Brandon David McInerney was upgraded from attempted murder after authorities learned that victim Lawrence King's condition was not survivable.
"When we got confirmation that he in fact was brain dead, there's state law in California that says that's good enough," said Ventura County Senior Deputy District Attorney Maeve Fox. Read more

University Group Sues Intel Over Patents

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's research arm has sued computer chip maker Intel claiming the company violated the university's patents in making the popular Core 2 Duo processor.
The federal lawsuit, filed Tuesday, alleges technology used in the processor to increase its speed and efficiency was created by researchers at the university and Intel should have obtained a licensing agreement to use it.
The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, a private, nonprofit patent management organization that supports research and controls the university's patents, filed the lawsuit. It claims the computer chip's microarchitecture infringes on a 1998 patent based on work by four researchers including Gurindar S. Sohi, chair of the computer science department. Read more

Infineon Technologies AG, the German maker of semiconductors, said Thursday that a downturn at its Qimonda computer memory chip subsidiary pushed it to a loss in the first quarter of its fiscal year as chip prices fell.
The company also reduced its outlook for demand for its products used by cell phone makers, and its shares tumbled 12.5 percent in Frankfurt to 5.86 euros ($8.57) by midday.
The Neubiberg-based company posted a loss of 396 million euros ($578.9 million) in the October-December period _ its fourth consecutive quarterly loss _ compared with a profit of 120 million euros a year earlier. Still, the results were still better than the loss of 445 million euros ($650.6 million) that analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast. Read more
