Fire chiefs seek probe of 'smart' meters in NV

Two northern Nevada fire chiefs have asked the Public Utilities Commission to investigate the safety of NV Energy's residential "smart" meters, saying they believe the meters are associated with a string of recent fires. Fire Chiefs Michael Hernandez of Reno and Tom Garrison of Sparks say four fires in Reno and five blazes in Sparks have been linked to smart meters since 2012.

Scandal-plagued Asahi Shimbun admits fabricating interview

The Asahi Shimbun , under fire for erroneous reports on Japan's wartime military brothels and the testimony of the late chief of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, revealed yesterday yet another scandal, saying it fabricated an interview with the president of Nintendo. In a statement yesterday, the newspaper said it produced a story in June 2012 that appeared to be an interview with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, though the paper actually compiled remarks he had posted on Nintendo's website.

Samsung accuses rival LG exec of vandalising washing machines

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has accused the head of rival LG Electronics Inc's home appliances business of damaging Samsung washing machines at retail stores in Germany and asked Seoul prosecutors to investigate. Samsung, in a statement on Sunday, said it asked the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office to investigate LG employees who the company says were seen deliberately destroying several of its premium washing machines on display at two stores earlier this month ahead of the IFA electronics show in Berlin.

Pikmin movie will premiere in Tokyo at the end of October

The Pikmin animated movie - a compilation of three shorts produced by Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto - will premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival at the end of October. "Pikmin Short Movies" comprises three shorts films: "The Night Juicer," in which Captain Olimar makes his favorite beverage; "Treasures in a Bottle," in which Pikmin discover a strange treasure and "Occupational Hazards," which is an adventure at a construction site.
