Lehigh Valley College to close

“During the teach-out period, each campus will continue to operate with minimal disruption to current students, enabling them to complete their programs at the current location”

Lehigh Valley College and eight other campuses owned by the for-profit Career Education Corp. will close because the Chicago -area parent company couldn't sell them, the company announced today.

In a news release, the company described the campus closings as 'teach-outs,' meaning no new students would be enrolled but existing students would be able to complete their studies.

The Pennsylvania attorney general began investigating LVC in 2005 after publication of a pair of articles in The Morning Call. The stories, which also sparked a state legislative hearing and a class-action lawsuit, said LVC's recruiters engaged in aggressive tactics; job placement services fell short of expectations; academic standards were lax; and expensive tuition and high-interest loans left some students with overwhelming debt. Career Education closing down campuses

Career Education Corp. said Friday that it intends to gradually close down two colleges and most operations at a third school, because it's been unable to locate a buyer for the properties.

The Hoffman Estates for-profit provider of educational services had announced late in 2006 plans for a 'strategic divestiture,' of selected schools and colleges. In mid-2007, it announced that it was going to conduct a 'teach-out' of the Long Beach and Sunnyvale, Calif. campuses of Brooks College because an appropriate buyer hadn't appeared. Read more

Scholar: US Sought Help in Bolivia

“Worldwide, we adhere to a strict understanding with the Peace Corps that their volunteers are not permitted to act in any sort of intelligence capacity”

An American scholar said Friday that an official at the U.S. Embassy asked him to keep tabs on Venezuelan and Cuban workers in Bolivia. Washington said that any such request would be an error and against U.S. policy.

'I was shocked,' Fulbright scholar Alex van Schaick told The Associated Press. 'I mean, this man's asking me to spy for the U.S. government.' Van Schaick is one of six Fulbright scholars doing research in the country.

The U.S. Embassy in La Paz issued a statement Friday saying that 'some routine information sessions about security given to certain American citizens included incorrect information. As soon as this was brought to our attention, appropriate measures were taken to assure that these errors would not be repeated.' Read more
