Dental care elusive

Dental therapists working in Alaska have been successful bringing down the rate of tooth decay in the area, but the American Dental Association nearly shut down the program because, the organization claims, only licensed dentists should perform “irreversible procedures” such as filling cavities and pulling teeth.

Fortunately, after a yearlong battle, Alaska’s Superior Court ruled in favor of the tribes.

While the ADA maintains that it’s just protecting the quality of dental care, many are accusing the organization of trying to shut out cheap competition, which would put preventative dental care in the hands of many who go without any dental services at all. The organization did not return requests for comment to this story, but the efforts of its Washington branch led the University of Washington to withdraw its support from the Alaskan consortium and kill a planned dental therapist tract at its dental school.

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the ADA “intimidated university officials by threatening to block donations by its members.”

Who says that good nutrition means eating animal fats? Weston A. Price

She advocates butter on bread "so thick you can see teeth marks in it," plenty of meat and unpasteurized, or raw, milk.

Those are foods recommended by Price, a Cleveland dentist who traveled the world studying primitive diets. His 1939 book, "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration," concluded that a diet high in the vitamins found in animal fats and untouched by "modern" innovations such as refined flour, sugar and chemically preserved foods was the key to preventing chronic disease and tooth decay.

Medicaid Dental Program Fails to Heal Nation's Toothache

Despite over 60 years of water fluoridaiton and 50+ years of fluoridated toothpaste, tooth decay, a disease that affects almost half of all second graders, and almost 80 percent of 17-year-olds, is the number one unmet health need among children in the United States. A new report issued by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), revealed that a third of all children covered by Medicaid received no dental care, and approximately 6.5 million children in Medicaid have untreated tooth decay. .

Fluoride Causes Cavities

Like all drugs, fluoride causes what it purports to cure

Dentists tell us that drinking “optimal” levels of fluoridated water - 1 part per million or 1 milligram fluoride per liter (quart) - each day, reduces tooth decay without serious side effects. While this dental dogma has never been proven scientifically, research shows, above optimal fluoride levels causes tooth decay and most Americans get more fluoride then they need.

Economic Fears Can Affect Dental Care

In the Seattle area, for every 10,000 people who lost their jobs, there was a 1.2 percent decrease in visits to dentists for checkups. The drop was higher in the Spokane area, where the same increase in unemployment was associated with a 5.95 percent decrease in preventive visits. This is notable as the study looked at people who had dental insurance that covered routine care.

EDITORIAL: Dental drill-and-fill idea a bit hard to swallow

Let's say you live on the Iron Range or elsewhere in rural Minnesota. And let's say there isn't a dentist nearby.

One idea that has captured the attention of Lloyd and others is a four-year dental therapy program, whose graduates would be allowed to drill and fill all patients and pull teeth in children (but not adults). The profession exists in Canada and New Zealand, where Lloyd and a Minnesota dental care delegation visited in August, and the group will soon be off to England to see dental therapists in action there

Alamo Heights: Touchy fluoride debate rages on

For almost an hour Kiel debated Cappelli and Tom Napier, a fluoridation engineer for the Texas Department of State Health Services. Because he heard their presentations before and knew their arguments, Kiel was prepared. In some cases he had the data from the studies the two referenced and could quote by page number the references they used. As the rest of the council smiled at each other, Kiel pulled slide after slide contesting what the two fluoride advocates argued. Finally, Mayor Louis Cooper ordered that not another slide be shown, as the issue would be addressed at the next meeting. .
