Nitrogen Gas Leak In San Jose Industrial Area

Firefighters and a hazardous materials team were on the scene of a nitrogen gas leak in an industrial area of San Jose Thursday morning, a fire captain said.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. workers responding to a natural gas leak in the area of Tasman Drive and North First Street around 12:30 a.m. drilled into a large nitrogen gas line, Capt. Barry Stallard said.

PG&E called the fire department around 4 a.m., and a full team responded, Stallard said.

The nitrogen gas is not flammable, but can asphyxiate those who breathe it, according to Stallard. The gas is commonly used to clean out other gas lines, according to Stallard.
