GM Europe wants to cut labor costs 10 percent

General Motors Europe wants to cut labor costs by 10 percent without eliminating jobs, according to a letter sent to GM employees.

In the letter, obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday, GM Europe chief Carl-Peter Forster said the company was being squeezed by falling sales amid the world economic crisis and a trend among consumers to buy smaller, more efficient cars.

GM will attempt to make up for the decline by cutting work hours and pay, as well as 'other labor cost related initiatives,' but the company does not envision job cuts at the moment, the letter said.

Japanese shares down on strong yen, Toyota rating

Japanese shares fell Wednesday as investors sold exporters on a strong yen, and Fitch Ratings cut Toyota's top-notch credit rating.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average lost 110.71 points, or 1.3 percent, to close at 8,213.22. The broader Topix index declined 1.73 percent to 817.22.

'Sentiment was downbeat as investors sold export-linked shares in line with a strong yen,' said Kazuhiro Takahashi, an equity strategist at Daiwa Securities SMBC Co. Ltd.

The yen stood at 94.95 to the dollar in late afternoon Tokyo trade, compared with 95.55 yen in New York late Tuesday. A rising yen hurts exporters like Sony and Toyota as it slashes the value of their profits when repatriated to Japan.
