According to an article in the Onion, the crash was the result of the plane to failing remain in the air.

I think The Onion might be better at crash investigation than the AF executives are.

So far the story seems to be Discordant information concerning the indicated airspeed, perhaps caused by pitot tube icing or ice occluding the drain hole, caused a series of events which tripped out the Auto Pilot.

They were in severe weather, may have had overspeed indications or stall warning indications, may have been relaxing and the cascade of events could have been unrecoverable though it seems strange.
The high vertical component at impact makes one wonder about a deep stall but this is unlikely.
Pilots these days monitor computers. Its hard when they are suddenly called upon to fly by the seat of their pants.
Failure to engage in prior weather deviations has caused speculation about the settings for the WX radar but ofcourse it was most likely being handled automatically.
ACARS messages are helpful but not determinative.
Messages are bunched in a one minute correlation window and then sent with a variety of priority codes determined by the system involved in the detection of the fault, the nature of the fault and whether the fault is transient or permanent.
