I never was a supporter of Lou Dobbs, altho I would support him before I supported a racist group like LA RAZA. How can you NOT call it a racist group? "LA RAZA" mean "The Race".

I didn't say anything about La Raza or what it means.

As a matter of fact though, that is not entirely accurate and not what the original meaning intended. You all use that same parrot reaction about the "The Race," "The Race," and hardly any of you know the truth about the origins of the name. I guess ignorance is bliss.

The Translation of Our Name: National Council of La Raza

Many people incorrectly translate our name,“La Raza,” as “the race.” While it is true that one meaning of “raza” in Spanish is indeed “race,” in Spanish, as in English and any other language, words can and do have multiple meanings. As noted in several online dictionaries,“La Raza” means “the people” or “the community.” Translating our name as “the race” is not only inaccurate, it is factually incorrect.“Hispanic” is an ethnicity, not a race. As anyone who has ever met a Dominican American, Mexican American, or Spanish American can attest, Hispanics can be and are members of any and all races.

The term “La Raza” has its origins in early 20th century Latin American literature and translates into English most closely as “the people” or, according to some scholars, as “the Hispanic people of the New World.” The term was coined by Mexican scholar José Vasconcelos to reflect the fact that the people of Latin America are a mixture of many of the world’s races, cultures, and religions. Mistranslating “La Raza” to mean “the race” implies that it is a term meant to exclude others. In fact, the full term coined by Vasconcelos,“La Raza Cósmica,” meaning the “cosmic people,” was developed to reflect not purity but the mixture inherent in the Hispanic people. This is an inclusive concept, meaning that Hispanics share with all other peoples of the world a common heritage and destiny.

And this is not just NCLR’s interpretation. According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language,“La Raza” means:

“…Mexicans or Mexican Americans considered as a group, sometimes extending to all Spanish-speaking people of the Americas.”

Furthermore, MSNBC’s online Spanish-English website, Encarta, translates the term this way:

“Hispanic Spanish-speakers in the Americas: Mexicans, Mexican Americans, or Spanish-speaking people of the Americas, considered as a group.”

The Free Dictionary, available online, similarly finds that the term “La Raza”:

“…embodies the notion that traditional, exclusive concepts of race and nationality can be transcended in the name of humanity’s common destiny.”

My cousin's wife is Mexican. And she told me the same thing. Although,I must admit I always thought it meant"the race". I didn't know it had different meanings. I guess sometimes if a person doesn't do some research they might get the wrong idea.

No matter how you translate it, "La Raza" is an organisation that is exclusionary and promotes only the agenda of a certain RACIAL group of people, and that creates conflict as last time I checked we are supposed to be protecting the interests of AMERICANS, and not alien peoples- many of whom can't even speak English, and many of whom aren't even American citizens. I also wonder just how many whites, blacks, and asians are in the "LA RAZA" organisation? Can you tell me?

I have no idea. Maybe about the same number than are in the NAACP or NOW.

Every group who has felt underprivileged or left behind has organized into an advocacy or educational group for their members. It's nothing new. Asians have them, young Puerto Ricans had the ASPIRA Organization which includes all Hispanic youth now. Practically every ethnic group in the country has some organized social or political group. It doesn't necessarily mean they are against white people. They're just trying to improve and educate themselves.

I know this is falling on deaf ears. People will see "racism" when they want and use it for their own agenda. Yes, I know it works both ways. Maybe someday, racism will be a thing of the past and people won't even think about it anymore. Why keep bringing it up over every issue that faces our country? Haven't we been dwelling on racism long enough?

Disagree with views expressed by left wing extremists, i.e., Obama supporters, and you are labeled a racist hater.

La Raza is as racist as the New Black Panther Party or the NAACP.

The only surprise about his announcement is that he didn't make it sooner. He'll end up at FOX Infotainment like all of the other rightwingers soon. CNN will go down in flames soon. The chasm between the left and right is widening in the country, so people will gravitate toward either FOX or MSNBC. CNN will dry up and fade away. Soon, everyone will have to pick a side, Liberal or Conservaturd. After the 2010 elections, there will be no moderates left.

MSNBC, yeah, THAT'S a reliable news source! Check out their cropped footage of a heavily armed, white racist ...

Everyone knows Obama supporters get their political news from The David Letterman Show and Saturday Night Live!
