Abbott technology may help identify severe infections sooner, lower health care costs

A new study suggests a pioneering testing technology could reduce hospital stays by up to eight days and lower annual health care costs for people with serious infections by approximately $2.2 million . The cost reductions are based on a health economic model from the RApid Diagnosis of Infections in the CriticAlly IlL study, presented today at the 54th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy in Washington, D.C. The RADICAL study indicates that Abbott's technology has the ability to detect the source of the infection such as bacteria, fungi or viruses within hours, even when blood cultures are negative.

Restarting infliximab therapy after a drug holiday is safe and effective for patients with inflammatory bowel disease , according to a new study1 in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology , the official clinical practice journal of the American Gastroenterological Association. "Our findings suggest that starting infliximab after a history of prior therapy can be very beneficial to patients," said lead study author Filip Baert, MD, PhD, from the department of gastroenterology, University Hospitals Leuven in Belgium.

Iran, US Officials Continue Bilateral Nuclear Talks

Iranian and US officials in the second day of their bilateral negotiations in Geneva discussed the latest developments in the nuclear talks between Tehran and the world powers and possible ways to settle their differences on Iran's nuclear program. Iranian Deputy Foreign Ministers Seyed Abbas Araqchi and Majid Takht Ravanchi held bilateral talks with their US counterparts Wendy Sherman and William Burns for over three and a half hours on Friday morning and continued today in the Swiss capital.
