Pushing Beyond Potential

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Oct. 13 -- Andray Blatche decided that his fifth season in the NBA was going to be about change. It started with picking a new number. He ditched No. 32, and buried all of the underachievement that had become associated with it, in exchange for No. 7, which Blatche said carried a dual meaning for 'seven days of hard work' and 'the Lord's number,' representing completion.

Blatche also got braces in the offseason, creating an even more youthful appearance for the 23-year-old backup big man who is perpetually tabbed for a breakout season.

Former Wizards Swapped

I will welcome AD, but I have to move on without my big bruza. So, was the Mike Miller and Randy Foye trade really all about the Minnesota Timberwolves getting Oleksiy Pecherov? Pecherov is now the only player remaining from the original trade Minnesota made with Washington two days prior to the NBA draft.

Evaluating Darius Songaila

Putting together Darius Songaila's stat-pack has been fairly amusing. The major advanced statistical measures just don't seem capable of agreeing about his worth: The Wages of Wins system hates him, assigning him a -.046 WP48, meaning that he not only doesn't help the team, he actually counters the beneficial work of others.

After Surgery, Stevenson Is Ready to Bounce Back

DeShawn Stevenson could not have imagined that the sharp back pain he felt while stretching last October would cause him to slide out of the Washington Wizards' starting lineup, endure his worst season in six years and require season-ending surgery to repair a herniated disk.

But questions about his return next season have been compounded by uncertainty about his role with the team after Ernie Grunfeld, the team's president of basketball operations, made a pre-draft trade to bolster the back court with the additions of Mike Miller and Randy Foye. Stevenson said he wasn't upset or insulted by the move, even when he heard that the Wizards tried to include him in the trade with Minnesota before the Timberwolves balked and asked for Darius Songaila instead.
