BOSTON, Sept. 1 -- Even though Lou Montanez hasn't played a game for the Class AA Bowie Baysox in nearly a month, he became just the fifth player in Eastern League history to win the league's Triple Crown.
Montanez finished with 26 homers and 97 RBI while tying Akron's Wes Hodges with a .335 batting average. The title became official when the league's regular season wrapped up Monday.
'It's real special,' Montanez said. 'I just like to be part of something that people will remember.'
Montanez, 26, became the league's first Triple Crown winner since Danny Thomas of the Berkshire Brewers did it in 1976. After his Aug. 5 call-up to the Orioles, Montanez kept an eye on the league's stats, curious to see if they would hold up.
