Rays successfully challenge out call at third

Making his Rays debut against the Yankees at Tropicana Field on Tuesday night, Nick Franklin took third base on a wild pitch from Michael Pineda with one out in the sixth inning, and his baserunning play ended up turning into a run -- but only after further review. Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon successfully challenged what was originally ruled an out, setting up Franklin's dash home on the next play.

Rays probably won't be tearing down roster

Rays owner Stuart Sternberg, left, and Manager Joe Maddon, right, laugh as Cecil Fielder takes the lineup to the umpires before the Rays spring training game against the Twins at Charlotte Sports Park Monday in Port Charlotte, FL. Principal owner Stuart Sternberg saying last week, in response to a question, that the payroll is headed down for 2015 is hardly a surprise after the Rays jumped from $62 million to a franchise-record $80 million, which he termed "an enormous aberration."

Rays Waste Cobb's Effort As Yankees Walk Off

Alex Cobb threw one-hit baseball in to the eighth inning, and Yunel Escobar his a pair of home runs and drove in four, but Chris Young hit a three-run walkoff home run to give the New York Yankees a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, eliminating them from the division race. Owner Stuart Sternberg expects Rays payroll to drop

Sternberg said the 2015 payroll is "clearly going to be lower" than this year's franchise-record $80 million, and he pointed out - albeit a small sample size - that they have had the most success when they have spent least. "We've run payroll into the and gotten into the World Series and well into the playoffs, and our two highest payrolls a the years we stepped it up were 2009 and 2014, and those are the only two years we haven't played significant September baseball," Sternberg said.

Rays vs. Yankees, game 1 recap: Ryan Hanigan blocks the path the playoffs

I get that the Yankees already had a very small chance of making the playoffs, but despite that -- or perhaps because of that -- it feels good to play spoilers this series. With no room for error, the Yankees need to go on a ridiculous run.

MLB clarifies home plate collision rule

Major League Baseball sent a memo to teams clarifying this year's experimental rule intended to limit collisions at home plate, saying runners should not be called safe if the ball clearly beats them. The rule, announced in February, says a catcher can't block the plate if he doesn't have the ball.
