Volstad, Johnson arrivals bad news for Hendrickson
Mark Hendrickson is handling the situation as professionally as he knows how, but he can't fully conceal his disappointment. Josh Johnson's return and Chris Volstad's promotion have pushed Hendrickson back to relief duty. He neither confirmed nor denied it, but it appears the Marlins informed Hendrickson of his pending demotion before his start Sunday in Colorado. 'I really don't have much to say right now,' Hendrickson said. 'It was a tough couple of days and I just need to come down and let everything settle. Somebody once told me that's why we get paid as much money as we do. It's not just the baseball side. That part's easy in the sense I think everybody enjoys doing that. Some of the stuff we have to deal with as athletes, it's not always easy.' Against the Rockies, Hendrickson allowed four runs on six hits, including a three-run fourth to lose a 3-1 lead, and exited after four innings and 81 pitches. 'I felt like I was back to competing the way I wanted to,' he said. 'I made some good pitches, didn't get the results I wanted. It was probably more frustrating coming out when I did. As a competitor that's tough to swallow, but that's not my decision.' Since winning seven of his first nine decisions, Hendrickson has gone 0-5 with a 9.71 ERA, 53 hits (12 homers), 17 walks and 25 strikeouts in 38 innings. He's strung together some good innings here and there, but an inability to close out hitters is his downfall. Opponents are batting .453 (24 for 53) with runners in scoring position and two outs off him. 'Obviously they've got some young, talented kids here,' Hendrickson said. 'Maybe they want to take a look. That's out of my control. I had a tough three days. I'll just keep that between me and the team. Just know that I was happy that mentally I prepared myself to go out there and pitch [Sunday].' It probably didn't sit well with Hendrickson that the Marlins yanked him one start shy of meeting his first incentive clause. In addition to his $1.5 million base salary, Hendrickson could make an additional $50,000 each for 20 and 22 starts, and $100,000 each for 24, 26, 28 and 30 starts.
