A game that started with the Cardinals starter being ejected before he could get his arm really loose ended with the Cardinals unable to muster anything, not even with a parade of pitch hitters, against Reds closer Aroldis Chapman. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said he went with bat speed against Chapman in the ninth - deploying Mark Ellis and Peter Bourjos, in place of Yadier Molina, as the first two hitters in the ninth.

The NL Central leaders lost for only the second time in 11 games and maintained their 4A1 2-game lead over Pittsburgh.
