Ramos, Zimmermann lead Nats to 3-0 win over Mets

The Washington Nationals won with Jordan Zimmermann on the mound for a ninth straight start, getting a two-run homer from Wilson Ramos in the seventh inning of a 3-0 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday. Zimmermann allowed six hits and a walk in outpitching Jonathon Niese for 6 2-3 innings, helping Washington reduce its magic number for winning a second division title in three years to five.

You are going to see the Washington Nationals in October, you are not going to be dazzled by them, and that will be just fine. It is ruthless efficiency, of a sort completely antithetical to the city they represent, that makes the Nationals the best team in the National League, with their magic number to clinch the East down to nine after a 6-2 win over the Mets on Thursday night.

Desmond leaves game with lower back tightness

Ian Desmond left Tuesday's game after five innings with lower back tightness, minor discomfort that he believes won't prevent him from playing Wednesday. Desmond said his back trouble flared up before the game and didn't dissipate as it has on a handful of occasions earlier this season, so he told Manager Matt Williams.

Adam LaRoche kept up his torrid stretch with two hits and two RBIs, and the Washington Nationals essentially put to rest any thought that there is still a serious race for the NL East title with a 6-4 win over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night. Washington's second victory in two nights over the Braves, gave the Nationals a nine-game lead over their second-place rivals with 19 to play.

The Washington Nationals today announced the signing of a two-year Player Development Contract extension with the Potomac Nationals of the Single-A Carolina League through the 2016 season. The Dodgers blew a two-run lead in the ninth, wasted two bases-loaded situations in extra innings without scoring but were down to their last out twice before extending the game only to finally lose, 8-5, to the Washington Nationals in 14 innings Wednesday afternoon. The game was the longest of the season for the Dodgers and at five hours, 34 minutes it was the eighth-longest in franchise history.

Adam LaRoche didn't have the decency to start Wednesday's game but he did all he could to end it, lifting the Nationals over the Dodgers 8-5 in an infuriating and exhilarating 14-inning contest on Wednesday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.
