Utley resting more as September grind hits

Chase Utley burst out of the starting gates in 2014, his red-hot play paving the way to his sixth All-Star Game selection. But Utley has seen a steady digression in his performance as the team has tread deeper into the year, potentially a result of the grind associated with a 162-game season.

Nats call on Roark to begin road swing in New York

Even though they sat five games under .500 with only 17 contests left to play entering Wednesday night, the Mets have refused to pack it in for 2014. Having won eight of their last 11 before their series finale vs. the Rockies, it's easy to see their reason for optimism.

Freddy Galvis, Phillies beat Pirates, 4-3

The Phillies got a run in the first on a Maikel Franco double and a Chase Utley single, but the Pirates answered in the second when Gregory Polanco walked and then raced all the way around from first on Jordy Mercer's double. In the bottom of the inning, Freddy Galvis -- and get ready for lots of the ordinarily light-hitting Galvis tonight -- doubled and then came home when pitcher David Buchanan singled up the middle.

Inside the Phillies: Utley has withstood the grind, but how long will it last?

While the Phillies plot their offseason strategy, one question will be how far into the future Chase Utley can be counted on to be a valuable contributor. It's a difficult question to answer, made more complicated by Utley's surprising durability this season at the age of 35. While his knee problems have been well documented, Utley made one trip to the disabled list last year, and that was for an oblique injury.
