Nicholas Ray - the brilliant director of They Live by Night , In a Lonely Place , On Dangerous Ground , Johnny Guitar , Rebel Without a Cause , Bigger Than Life , and Bitter Victory - knew Chicago well.

By the end of the '60s, Hollywood was done with the hard-drinking, rule-breaking, ambivalent humanist-iconoclast/auteurist icon Nicholas Ray , director of, among many others, They Live By Night , Johnny Guitar , and, most famously, Rebel without a Cause .

Currently exhibiting at LeBasse Projects in Chinatown is "They Live By Night," A Morgan Slade's second solo exhibit with the gallery.

Catch the free 1949 movie, "They Live by Night," in the Barrington library auditorium at 7 pm.

The handsome leading man was best known for roles in Hitchcock films. He began his acting career as a teenager in 1943's "The North Star" and went on to star in such movies as "They Live by Night" and Hitchcock's "Rope" and "Strangers on a Train." He later appeared on Broadway and in a range of TV roles.
