Man fatally shot during Morgan student party
“You're always concerned about your child's safety”
A man charged into an off-campus apartment near Morgan State University early Friday and fatally shot a guest at a party before fleeing through a window, authorities said.
Police officers responding to a call discovered the body of the victim, a man who is not believed to be a current Morgan student, in a doorway on the first floor of the Morgan View Apartments, a privately run student housing complex in the 1500 block of Pentridge Road.
The man, whose identity was not released Friday, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m. Read more

A city police officer shot and killed a knife-wielding man yesterday morning after the man had chased a woman through a Northwest Baltimore apartment complex and fatally stabbed her, according to city police.
The woman, Shenera Norris, 31, had two children, including a 1-year-old toddler with the man who stabbed her, police said.
Police have not identified the man they said stabbed the woman. 'We're still trying to notify his family members,' said Sterling Clifford, a police spokesman. Read more

Stolen city ambulance found in Stafford, Va.
“Our policy is to secure the unit anytime it is unattended”
A Baltimore paramedic unit that was stolen this morning from an emergency bay at the University of Maryland Medical Center has been recovered on Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Va., according to a city fire official.
Chief Kevin Cartwright, a department spokesman, said a suspect is in custody. No other details were immediately available. The ambulance, Medic 24, had been seen on the Beltway in Prince George's County headed toward Virginia.
Cartwright said the theft occurred about 10:30 a.m. from the hospital near West Lombard and Penn streets. He said two paramedics took a patient inside and left the ambulance unlocked. They immediately notified commanders when they emerged and found the 2000 Ford vehicle missing. Read more

Suspect in fatal stabbing is shot by police
A man who police suspect fatally stabbed a woman this morning at a Northwest Baltimore apartment complex was later shot and critically wounded by a city police officer, according to a department spokeswoman.
Police were called to the 4400 block of Fairview Ave. in West Forest Park about 9 a.m. for a report of an aggravated assault. Officer Nicole Monroe, the spokeswoman, said officers found the body of the woman outside.
Neighbors told police that the man responsible was inside an apartment. Monroe said officers went in the apartment and confronted a man armed with a knife. Read more

Late-night fire damages 3 buildings in Baltimore

Firefighters battled a two-alarm dwelling fire late last night near Mondawmin Mall that extensively damaged a vacant rowhouse and extended into a bail bond business next door. Occupants of a second adjoining dwelling escaped without injury, said a Fire Department spokesman.
Reported about 11 p.m. in the 2400 block of Reisterstown Road, the fire damaged all three floors of the vacant house at 2407 Reisterstown Road and forced the residents of 2405 from their home and into an ambulance, where medics examined them for possible injuries. Read more

Man gets life plus 20 years for fatal shooting
A 37-year-old man was sentenced yesterday to life plus 20 years in prison for fatally shooting a man on Greenmount Avenue in East Baltimore in 2005, according to city prosecutors.
Raymond Handy, of the 500 block of E. 30th St., also received a 14-year sentence, to be served consecutively, for violating terms of his probation from a 2002 drug distribution conviction, of which he had served one year of a 15 year sentence.
Prosecutors said Handy shot Mark C. Jones, 40, in the 2500 block of Greenmount Ave. in the early afternoon of May 1. Jones, one of 18 siblings who lived in the 500 block of E. 26th St., died later at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Read more

Man convicted of gun violations in officer's shooting

A 25-year-old man was convicted in U.S. District Court in Baltimore yesterday of carjacking and handgun violations in connection with the near-fatal shooting of a city police officer and faces life in prison when he is sentenced April 25, according to federal prosecutors.
Collin Hawkins used a gun to carjack a man in Baltimore on Nov. 22, 2006, and was arrested less than a month later after shooting a city police officer in Northeast Baltimore, according to city police.
In connection with the shooting of the officer, Hawkins was convicted of possession of a firearm by a felon and using a firearm in a violent crime, according to prosecutors. He also was convicted of carjacking for the Nov. 22 incident. Read more

Charges Dropped In Fatal Shooting
Baltimore prosecutors Friday dropped all charges against a 20-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a pregnant woman.
State's Attorney's Office spokeswoman Margaret Burns says there were mistakes in the investigation, resulting in a weak case against Oscar Adams. He was accused of killing 19-year-old Ashley Harris, who was gunned down in March 2006 in the 1800 block of North Charles Street. A police report says Harris was struck by random gunfire after a fight at a nightclub that spilled outside. Read more

Church official accused of rape

The 31-year-old music director of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal, an influential West Baltimore church, was in jail yesterday on charges that he raped and abused a 12-year-old female parishioner during three encounters, city police and church officials said.
Timothy D. Price III of Owings Mills has been held in lieu of $1 million bail at Baltimore's Central Booking and Intake Center since he was arrested Wednesday, according to court records. He was charged with second-degree rape, assault, child abuse and multiple sex offenses. Read more
