We've always been big fans of Suzukis around here. From the Jimny to the Samurai, and down to the present day, we're continually impressed by their affordability, economy, and overall stoutness of build; for a line of budget SUVs, we've learned first-hand that they can stand a lot of abuse and still keep running.

The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India is mulling to locally assemble its sports utility vehicle Grand Vitara by next year, as it looks to bring an advanced version of the SUV to arrest falling sales.

Last week while in Japan for the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show , I got the chance to see Suzuki's headquarters in Hamamatsu, which is about a 90-minute bullet train ride to the southeast of the Japanese capital.
