Some Green Fuels Burn Sweeter Than Others

It seemed, at the time, like such a good thing for the planet: In the winter of 2005, I turned in my red, gas-hungry Jeep Wrangler for a near-new, diesel-burning Volkswagen Beetle.

How about just driving a fuel efficient gas powered car and be done with it. Heroics are not necessary. If everybody just drove a reasonably fuel efficient car, we wouldnt have these problems.

Fuel efficient doesnt have to be small especially if you are willing to do a (normally fueled) diesel; the Passat TDI wagon that is available in Europe gets more than 35 mpg and its not small or slow by any means

Actually your BioDiesel is not "Carbon Neutral". Unless the plants hop out of the ground and squeeze themselves it will take mechanical equipment including trucks to transport. In fact most of these "alternative" fuels actually require more energy to produce than they return. Corn based fuels are the worst. Ride a bike or walk instead if you really want to save the planet, Smugly filling your tank with fuel that cost more energy to produce just shows you as a fool.

Actually riding a bike to work is not truly carbon neutral. It takes fuel and energy and big pollting plants to manufacture the bicycles.

I'm saying this tongue in cheek mainly because, of course you are right, but everything has some kind of carbon footprint. Unless you walk to work, barefoot.

But if everyone just practiced some degree of moderation we'd be fine. The earth is self healing up to a certain point.

I dont personally believe in the falacy of man-made global warming, but I still believe we should reasonably try to minimize our footprint.

Burning wood, or "biomass" in the new vernacular, is pretty close to carbon neutral. If I cut up a tree that has fallen near my hous, in a windstorm, with a chain saw (using only about 2 gallons of gas in the process), I'm getting pretty much pure, "carbon neutral" energy.
