Regarding Robert E. Cherney's Oct. 19 letter, "Why kill Pontiac? Why keep Buick?": I'd like to assure your readers that phasing out Pontiac was one of the most difficult decisions of my career but also one of the most necessary.

I personally never saw any need for pontiacs. Most of their cars were identical to chevrolets, the camaro and the firebird/Trans am for instance.

At one time Pontiac was the performance brand and it had a large following. Unfortunately, GM failed the brand and brought forward lackluster product until it was to far gone to save. A sad story indeed-
