If you only knew how difficult, and how expensive, it has become to get rid of American citizenship --> thanks to YOUR dictator and war criminal W. But don't worry, the tens of thousands of American expats living all over the world, will let you enjoy the sinking ship called the U.S. of A. You can have it all to yourself :) haha

Oh, and you are welcome to pay for the American paradise, too, with your taxes...:) Because after 8 years of Bush's wars and his budgeting, the economy is so screwed up that it will take an endless flow stimuli and corporate welfare, just to keep what's left above water.

You mean for the Opel line? The German car they are selling in the States as a Buick?:)

What are they going to do now that they are just a minority shareholder in Opel? If they want to continue selling re-badged Opels in the States as "American cars", they will have to pay royalties for that. no? That will get pretty expensive....

GM owns Opel. It has not been sold, nor do they pay royalties.

True. They announced just this morning that the Opel sale is off the table.

If GM does keep Opel it will not win them any good points with Merkel's government. The board must be the biggest bunch of idiots on the planet, to piss off the government of a host country like this.

Second, if GM keeps Opel, it will result in more job losses in Germany, Belgium and the U.K., than if Magna and the Russians had bought them. They are already planning to shut 3 factories. I don't know if you speak any other languages beside English or, being a "true American", if that's all you can manage, but here is an article in the Frankfurter Allgemeine. In case you have not heard of it before, it is a good mainstream German daily.

GM owns Opel, no need to speculate about “what ifs,” there is no choice in the matter. Recap, Opel is GM’s company and they have elected not to sell it and nothing can be done about it, end of discussion.

Oh no my conservative friend. There WILL be discussion, lots of them. First of all, they will have to repay the bridge load they got from Merkel's government. Second, they will need several billion dollars in loans or investment to restructure Opel. The article in Frankfurter Allgemeine says GM is relying on teh German governmetn to supply the funding... Haha After they screw them, they plan to come with a hat asking for more money?

Did you read teh article, or are you going to wait until what they tell you on Faux News or Rush? Or at the local redneck bar in Shreveport?

What a classic back-stabbing American big-company move. First make a deal, get the host government to arrange funding, then f**k everybody over.

Irrelevant – they can discuss until the cows come home. It doesn’t change anything. At the end of the day GM owns ..hold on let me repeat that…. GM owns…oh man let me just make this clear one more time..GM owns Opel and no “discussions” will change that. Welcome to the real world. Let me give you some advice; don’t pit your life on the liberal Frankfurter Allgemeine. I am here to help you and mentor you, I mean that.

So what is GM going to do when they find themselves without money to finance the reorg? They may just go bankrupt again.... I think it would be funny if the government forced them to go through with the sale.... Germany has wide-ranging laws giving the government a lot of power over big businesses. What a stupid outfit GM is.

So did you read the article, or are just another dumb American who only speaks English? Other than that, please keep your "education" for whoever is interested in it (=other rednecks).

I am not disputing that. I am questioning the idiocy of GM's board to pull out of a deal and piss off the government of a host country. They will pay for that. But then, GM has behaved stupidly for the last 30 years, nothing new.

The second point is that if GM keeps Opel, it will most likely cost more jobs than if Magna and the Russians bought them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but....
Isn't the German Government seriously ticked at GM for waffling on the Opel sales deal--especially since that same Govt. gave a ton of bailout money to GM to keep the place afloat?

(Oh sorry JJFADS---I just pointed out an embarrassing parallel that you repeatedly take issue with--namely offshore companies being given incentives in the US....guess what---US automakers evidently get similar breaks from other countries they do business in---wow!!)

On the contrary, selling Opel to the Germans and the Russians would have been the equivalent to GM cutting off a leg. No global company should forfeit Europe if they want to be global.
To add insult to injury, Opel managers that were in support of the sale are about to be tossed out and replaced with American counterparts.

I believe you're correct. I haven't read anything further on it, but I would imagine the German govt will want that money paid back. And GM would be the one to pay it. And just where would they get that money?(((this is where all American taxpayers take a bow)))

Germans will give them even more money now, just as they were the Russians and Magna.

Germany promised 6.58 billion in state aid to any buyer of Opel, at the time it was to lure magna in with the Russians. At any rate the short answer is to save jobs in Germany during an election year (hence all the saber rattling). To put it bluntly GM has called the bluff and is currently dangling a carrot in front of the Germans.

If Opel goes under again GM will have first dibs on all of Opel’s assets.
