Long Beach Special

Nice looking cars, Long Beach in better times.

Take a look at that sky...it's blue! This was right before the red cars were scrapped and socal filled up with autos, trucks and buses. No more blue skies after that, but lots of pollution, traffic congestion, freeway construction, accidents and general chaos. The photo appears to be of the south elevated terminal, just south of the Pacific Electric Building. That's where the Long Beach cars departed from and arrived. I rode on them a few times when I was just a little kid. My uncle saw the salvaged red cars all stacked up on Terminal Island and took me to see them. He said he felt sad that a good system was being thrown away.

I remember as a kid in Long Beach my Father taking me for a ride on the Red Car that went to LA. This was about 1958 or so. Thanks for the memories.
