Letter to the editor, December 23rd, 2008
The Toronto Star article stated,
“one positive signal was a willingness to examine how federal environmental assessments (EA) for major public works projects can be expedited or combined with Ontario regulations …
sometimes we’re all desiring to unlock projects but process stands in the way.”
Though positive for proponents of perhaps unneeded development,
this is cause for alarm about how our environment could be hurt by a rush to promote infrastructure projects.
After all the environmental assessment process is a requirement for proposed developments that will have a negative effect on the environment.
By promoting development that will cause the environment harm, and
limiting or removing the need to review and possibly mitigate the affects of building,
we would be placing our already imperiled environment at further risk.
It would be a dangerous precedent to alter the EA process.
Let’s not make our environment another casualty of tough economic times.
If we treat our environment with reverence, we could find sustainable ways to produce revenue that won’t require destruction through unquestioned construction.
The EA process shouldn’t be seen as a process that stands in the way, but one that limits pointless harm to our environment.
