Soft copper wire, which you twist to tighten. That holds all the pieces in almost perfect position, and then you make thick, wide fillets of epoxy inside the kayak, in the corners. Then you snip off the wire on the outside, then put a layer of fiberglass on the inside and the outside, which strengthens it and seals the wood from water. It is astonishingly strong and light.
