IF THE words "kooky" and "quirky" - when used to describe a comedy - make you excited, then you might enjoy this kooky and quirky comedy.

Damsels, yes. Distressed, not so much. In fact, Greta Gerwig and Analeigh Tipton are positively giddy the day after screening their new comedy, Whit Stillman's Damsels In Distress at the Toronto Film Festival.

Somebody showed Greta Gerwig an early review of Damsels in Distress, the new Whit Stillman lark in which she stars - and in which she leads an ersatz Hollywood musical dance number - and the actress was not happy.

Damsels in Distress, writer-director Whit Stillman's first film in 13 years, is a comedic fable set at a fictional college in the East at some indeterminate time that seems like the present but might as well not be.
